The first step in any apprenticeship is to get a job with an employer who is willing to sponsor you as an apprentice.

As an apprentice, you learn while you earn from experienced workers on the job. To progress in your trade, you can attend SNP to complete your in-school technical training taught by qualified trades instructors.

Quick links provide additional information and details on apprenticeships and our upcoming programs.

How to start an apprenticeship

To qualify for an apprenticeship, you must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Have legal permission to work in Canada (e.g., have a valid social insurance number)
  • Meet the educational requirements for your chosen trade
  • Have a sponsor in Ontario

If you meet all the qualifying bullets above the next step is to apply for an apprenticeship:

If you're 18 years old or older you can apply online through the Skilled Trades Ontario Portal (STOP). Before you begin the application process, make sure you have this information handy:

  • Your personal information
  • Sponsor’s information
  • Sponsor contact person’s information
  • Work arrangement details

If you’re 16 to 17 years old you must download a paper application.

  • Save the application to your computer
  • Fill out the application
  • Print the application and sign it
  • Get your parent or guardian and your sponsor to sign it
  • Mail the completed, signed application to your local Employment Ontario apprenticeship training office

Employment Ontario will review your application and let your sponsor know if your application was approved. If your application is approved, the ministry will:

  • Create a training agreement for you and your sponsor to sign
  • Approve the signed agreement
  • Register your apprenticeship training

When you have finished your training as an apprentice, you will get a Certificate of Apprenticeship. To obtain the Certificate of Apprenticeship, you and your sponsor have a few tasks to complete.  For certain trades, you will also need to complete an exam to get a Certificate of Qualification.
