Through individual and/or group tutoring, students will receive assistance with all aspects of their school assignments. Academic Support is offered every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evening at Six Nations Polytechnic from 6:00 - 8:45 pm in the Achievement Centre room. Qualified teachers/tutors are available every evening for any assistance that students might require.
Services offered through the Academic Support program include help with math and science coursework, support with Language Arts and English assignments that meet the needs of students (from assistance with reading, researching, writing and editing and referencing their work), and round table working groups for secondary math and science study, for secondary exams. Tutors can help to develop skills in Math, Science, and Literacy by providing additional support for students who are at risk and have supplemental work provided by their teachers. Students may come to use internet-based resources, such as online sites for multiplication tables and reviews, Mathletics math program for junior and intermediate students, Lexia and Power Up reading programs, and access to online Cayuga and Mohawk language apps. Learning opportunities are available for all subject areas including elementary math concepts and internet access for Lexia Reading and Mathletics Math Programs offered at Six Nations Federal Schools. The Academic Support program also helps students with organizational skills that provide a good foundation for success throughout the school year.
The ultimate goal of the Academic Support Program is to promote positive attitudes about learning, provide ongoing support throughout the school year, and build a good foundation for students moving from elementary to secondary school and from secondary school to post-secondary education. A tremendous strength of the program is its qualified tutors for both elementary and secondary subjects. With a focus on secondary Math and Science qualifications, tutors are able to support many student needs and provide concrete examples of what teachers require for good marks.
The high-speed internet is a great resource for students at the Academic Support program. Laptops are available for accessing coursework online while tutors assist students with their learning process. Projects requiring internet research such as Arts and Social Studies Presentations, Haudenosaunee Culture and Language work, Science Fair Projects, and Geography/History assignments are well supported. Students who do not have internet access at home are encouraged to come to Academic Support, for internet use and research capabilities. Students can also use the internet to access homework, online assignments, and school-related activities using the laptops and/or their D2L (Brightspace) platforms.
Attending Academic Support early in the semester or school year allows students to become familiar with the program so that it is easy to attend when they require help with their studies, assignments, and homework, as well as advanced preparations for tests and exams.
Academic Support offers Six Nations youth in grades 5-12 assistance with their school work in all subject areas in a relaxed, supportive learning environment.
In previous years, the grade levels were set at 6-12 but through contact with parents and teachers, we are finding that grade 5 students could benefit from school work support also. Students have access to the internet/computers to complete assignments and projects. Students are required to bring their schoolwork, books, and any materials that will assist the tutors in supporting their needs. The location is a quiet place to work and study. We offer tutor support, especially for Math (Calculus, Data Management, Functions) and Science (Chemistry, Biology and Physics) courses in secondary school so that these students have a dedicated tutor who works with and knows the curriculum expectations.
Our goal is to support students in all areas of their academic achievement through continued schoolwork support. Our tutors work at various elementary and secondary schools with our students and have expertise in their subject area of support.
