This course provides candidates with an overview of First Nation, Métis and Inuit perspectives which have been organized in themes that will reflect the similarities and uniqueness of their respective knowledge, culture, language, traditions and how that may relate to the present situation for children in the Ontario classroom. The course has been organized in themes and lessons that will guide candidates to begin to understand and validate Indigenous ways of knowing that may operate in a western developed framework. This course supports inquiry-based learning which honours candidates’ knowledge and contributions throughout. The idea of holistic learning is embedded in the foundation of this course and seeks to reflect and model the importance of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual teaching and learning. Candidates will build on their personal experiences and knowledge to create and model new approaches.

Teachers certified with the Ontario College of Teachers are eligible to take AQ courses. Ontario B.Ed students may take courses prior to membership with OCT, if they have met all the requirements to graduate and if they have applied to the OCT for a Certificate of Qualification.
Special permission may be granted by SNP to allow those without teacher qualifications to enrol.
Candidates must be qualified for admission according to Regulation 184-97 of the Ontario College of Teachers Act.
Certification will be recommended to the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) for those candidates who successfully complete the course, who hold membership with OCT, and who hold a valid or interim Certificate of Qualification/letter of Eligibility.

Non-certified teachers will be considered for admission on a case-by-case basis.
