OHSWEKEN, ON – Six Nations Polytechnic held a contest to name the newly renovated Student Lounge at the Ohsweken Campus. The students submitted names which the staff then voted on to decide the winner. The winning name was ‘Ohkwarihne’, which is Mohawk for ‘Bears Den’. During the winning announcement, a bear’s den was described as “[a place where a bear goes] to basically recharge. It’s also a safe comfortable environment for some downtime. Then once out the door, it’s back to the reality of life [and] school.”
This new name will be made into a plaque and hung outside the entrance to the student lounge. The winning name was submitted by Bachelor of Arts in Ogwehoweh Languages – Mohawk student, Kayla Davis. For choosing the winning name, Davis was awarded an Acer laptop, a laptop bag and a year subscription to Office 365.
Also during the opening celebrations, door prizes were given including gift cards to various stores and services. Food was also provided for the students including a cake decorated with icing of the Six Nations Polytechnic logo.
The students of SNP now have a place where they can go to study, hang out with friends, watch TV, charge their phones and have access to computer stations. The lounge also features a kitchen where students can prepare their meals. The renovations are sure to make students feel at home and provide a relaxing environment for all.
