On March 18th, 2025, Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) hosted a powerful grief teaching event led by Jock Hill, aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of grief through traditional Haudenosaunee teachings. Over 100 attendees, including students, staff, and community members, gathered to take part in this meaningful experience. The event also welcomed visitors from neighbouring Haudenosaunee communities such as Allegany, Cattaraugus, and Akwesasne, highlighting the shared commitment to healing and cultural reconnection across the region.

By integrating traditional teachings, communal support, and great food, SNP was able to create an environment where individuals could come together, share experiences, and connect not only with one another but also with the institution itself. The event’s central theme was providing a traditional perspective on grief and loss, offering participants an opportunity to ground themselves in our cultural practices. These teachings were not only valuable for our people but also for allies who work with Indigenous communities. Attendees gained practical insights on how to support themselves and others in navigating the complexities of grief and strengthening their emotional toolkits for healing.

One of the most memorable moments of the event came from Jock Hill’s words. He shared a profound metaphor: “We are like fire, that’s our spirit. Sometimes life happens in a way that dims those fires, but it’s up to us to relight it and build that fire back up again.” This powerful analogy resonated deeply with the audience, reminding us that even in our darkest moments, we have the ability to reignite our inner strength. Another impactful teaching involved a symbolic practice that Jock shared—taking a leaf, speaking thoughts and grief to it, and then gently releasing it into the water. This act represents sending our thoughts into Mother Earth, allowing the land to absorb and carry them away. It’s a beautiful reminder to let go and find peace in the natural world.

Throughout the event, Jock emphasized the importance of connecting with the earth, honouring the seasons, participating in ceremonies, and learning the language. All these elements are fundamental to the identity and well-being of Haudenosaunee people. By nurturing these connections, we are not only healing from loss but also strengthening our sense of belonging and cultural identity.

The event exemplified SNP’s commitment to creating spaces for learning and cultural exchange. By weaving together teachings from Haudenosaunee traditions and allowing students to bring their families, SNP is helping to build a stronger, more inclusive community. This event not only supported the personal healing of attendees but also served as an invitation to those considering SNP as an educational institution, providing a glimpse into the rich cultural environment that defines who we are.

SNP is proud of the turnout and deeply grateful for the opportunity to continue offering spaces where our people can reconnect with their culture, their community, and themselves. Events like these are vital in creating a future where learning, culture, and healing go hand in hand.
