OHSWEKEN, June 8, 2023 – Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) to celebrate the unveiling of a brand-new learning space located at the Ohsweken campus. This project was funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation to support the needs within the community during the COVID-19 Pandemic. The construction of an outdoor steel arbor at the Six Nations campus will provide SNP with infrastructure to offer in-person programming while meeting health and safety needs of participants and learners. The open-air and culturally appropriate outdoor learning and event space aligns with traditional land-based learning pedagogy and will enable instructors and the Indigenous Knowledge Centre staff the opportunity to develop land-based lessons and events.
The construction of this steel arbor also pays homage to Six Nations community’s long history and excellence in trades, enabling SNP to hire community contractors for its completion. SNP partnered with K.L. Martin & Associates Corp. and First Nations Engineering Services Ltd. (KLMC/FNESL) as the engineer and consultant for the project. KLMC/FNESL provided the site design and worked with ABC Recreation who was the company that designed and constructed the Pavillion. Brimar Construction was retained to assist in the landscape design.
SNP is to host a formal unveiling of the Arbor and will invite SNP students, staff and community to be the first to enjoy this new space. The Arbor will provide an outdoor space for the learning community to grow with land-based teachings for years to come. Unveiling event information to come.
