Six Nations Polytechnic Announces the Appointment of Inaugural Vice-President Academic

June 1st, 2021–Ohsweken, ON –Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) is pleased to announce the appointment of Sara General-Deer as the inaugural Vice-President Academic. This position as senior academic officer will oversee the planning, development and administration of all academic affairs embodying SNP’s academic mission and vision. “By maintaining SNPs organizational integrity, we honour our history, knowledge and the resilience of our people while remaining qualitatively differentiated from other post-secondary, trades and training institutes in this country,” said Rebecca Jamieson, President and CEO of SNP. 

Since joining the SNP team in 2012, Sara has contributed significantly to the development of policy, programs, and strategies in the revitalization of Indigenous languages and culture at the postsecondary level as the Director of the Deyohahá:ge: Indigenous Knowledge Centre (IKC) and Research. “I am deeply honoured to serve the Six Nations Polytechnic community in this new capacity,” said Sara General-Deer. “SNP’s commitment to supporting the revitalization and transmission of Ogwehoweh knowledge and languages while also creating educational, employment and research opportunities across our academic pillars has been steadfast. I look forward to working alongside our learners, instructors, programs and support areas to develop and implement an academic plan that will carry us into a sustainable future, as one.” Sara holds a Doctor of Education from Western University. Her doctoral research explored the notion of collaboration in Indigenous language revitalization as informed by Haudenosaunee oral tradition. 

SNP is the only Indigenous Institute in Canada to offer a stand-alone degree for Hodinohso:ni languages, the Bachelor of Arts in Ogwehoweh languages. The institute has two campuses in Ohsweken and Brantford where learning takes place in culturally supportive, interactive learning environments, designed to support student success at all levels including; university, colleges and trades, life-long learning and the STEAM Academy secondary school. “The appointment of the inaugural VPA is a historic milestone for SNP. With Sara’s knowledge, experience and understanding of our ways of knowing and being applied to academic leadership, SNP will be further strengthened in its capacity to continue to fulfill its mandate with integrity,” Rebecca Jamieson.
