Nathan Rowbottom Wins the 2024 Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence in STEM

BRANTFORD, June 28, 2024 – On June 12, 2024, the Prime Minister’s Awards were announced by the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne and the Honourable Jenna Sudds on behalf of the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada. This year, 69 of Canada’s top educators were recognized for their exceptional work. The award categories included Teaching Excellence; Teaching Excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM); and Excellence in Early Childhood Education. It is with great honour to share that Nathan Rowbottom, teacher at Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) STEAM Academy, has been awarded the 2024 Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence in STEM.

Through a partnership between Mohawk College and IBM, SNP STEAM Academy offers the Pathways in Technology (P-TECH) program. Over a five-year period, students earn their OSSD and a two-year Ontario College Diploma in Software Engineering. Nathan teaches this program with the ability to blend technology with Hodinohso:ni language and culture. His leadership not only inspires students but also motivates them to push beyond their boundaries and strive for excellence. He shares a passion for breaking down the false notion that Indigenous students must choose between culture and technology. Nathan's students are actively engaged in developing tools that share knowledge and reclaim their culture. He aims to educate and motivate a generation of problem-solving, community-minded youth who recognize that they can pursue their interest in technology while growing their cultural connections.

“SNP is thrilled to congratulate Nathan on his outstanding accomplishments and is honoured to have him as a source of inspiration, guidance, and encouragement for our current and future students.”
